בינתיים פרצה מלחמת עולם השנייה וכשהידיעות הראשונות וההבנה על מה שקורה ליהו אירופה החלו לזרום לארץ מצד אחד, והחשש הגובר מההצלחות של צבאו של רומל בקרבות שבצפון אפריקה כנגד הצבא הבריטי והתקדמותו לכיוון פלשתינה – א”י, הביאו לקריאות מצד ההגנה לצעירי הארץ להתגייס לצבא הבריטי ולהילחם בנאצים. בנוסף לכך בההגנה עם ראייה לתווך הרחוק כבר הבינו שכל ניסיון שיצטבר בשירות הצבא הבריטי יהיה בעל ערך חשוב במאבק העתידי להקמת המדינה היהודית.
Soon after, World War II commenced, and upon the initial circulation of the news of what was beginning to happen to the Jews of Europe, as well as the impending advance of Rommel’s Nazi army across North Africa towards Palestina – the land of Israel, there were calls for the Jewish youth to enlist in the British Allied Forces. Furthermore, many in the Hagganah took a long outlook on this effort and saw the benefit in the Jews of Palestina gaining useful military experience which would be important in the future struggle for the founding of the state of Israel.
ב1942 הייתי רק בת 16 אבל כבר לא יכולתי להמתין יותר. לא סיפרתי דבר להורי, אבל הצלחתי לזייף את מסמכי תעודת הלידה מקובה, ובטענה שאני כבר בת 18 הצלחתי להערים על הבריטים ולהתגייס לצבא, ליחידת הקשר של חייל האויר המלכותי. לאחר תקופת אימונים קצרה הוצבתי בבסיס בקהיר. ירדנו ברכבת דרך אל עריש למצרים וכאן ביליתי עד סוף המילחמה יחד עם קבוצת בנות מגויסות מהארץ, רובן מההתיישבות העובדת וכמובן חבורת בנות אנגליות. בתקופה הזאת למדתי והשתמשתי במכשור הכי חדיש שהיה אז לתקשורת והצפנת מידע, כמו הטלפרינטרים לדוגמא.
In 1942, I was only 16, and could no longer bide my patience. I did not reveal a thing to my parents, but I was able to forge my Cuban birth certificate, altering a minor detail that made me now an 18 year old ready to enlist in the army, in the Royal Airforce (RAF) Signals Corps. After a short training stint, I was assigned to a base in Cairo. We travelled down by train via El Arish to Egypt, and here I spent the rest of the war with a group of young ladies who had enlisted from Palestina, and of course a group of English ladies. During this period I learned how to and used the most modern communication and data collection equipment, such as the tele-printers for example.
