לקראת סיום המלחמה, משרדי הממשלה של מדינת ישראל הטריה הוקמו, ואני התחלתי לע במשרד החקלאות שבקריה.
Towards the end of the war, the offices of the newly minted State of Israel were established, and I began to work for the office of agriculture, that was in the Kiryah.
עם המעבר לתל-אביב חודשה גם חברות ילדותי עם חנה, והתחלנו להתראות לעיתים קרובות ולהיפגש גם עם שוש אחותה ושאר ידידיה.
With our migration to Tel Aviv I renewed my childhood friendship with Hannah, and we began to see each other regularly and meet up with Shosh her sister and the rest of her friends.
אני עדין זוכרת את אותו הערב שהיה אמור להיות ערב של בנות בלבד. נפגשנו בבית קפה ברחוב דיזינגוף שהיה אז הלב של העיר. ופתאום הגיעה קבוצת בנים תל אביבים שחנה הכירה. היא שמחה לקראתם בעיקר לעבר גדליה ,והם כמובן בלי לשאול שאלות הצטרפו לשולחננו, וכל האווירה השתנתה. אני זוכרת כיצד כעסתי בתחילה על ההפרעה והשינוי בתכנית, אולם לא עברו מספר דקות והתחלתי גם אני ליהנות מחברתם ובעיקר מזו של צבי שהיה גבהה ורזה, בעל עיניים ירוקות ובעל חוש הומור מיוחד. וכשעמדנו ללכת הוא הציע ללוות אותי הביתה, מאחר והלך באותו כיוון, לבית הוריו שברמת גן. כשהגענו הביתה המשכנו לפטפט ארוכות ואז הוא הזמין אותי לצאת אתו – והשאר שייך כבר להיסטוריה.
I still remember that same evening that was supposed to be a ladies-only evening. We all met up in a Café house in Dizingoff Street, that was then the heart of the city. Suddenly a bunch of Tel-Aviv boys that Hannah knew came our way. She was particularly happy to call them over, especially Gedaliah, and they, without question, joined our table, and the mood completely changed. I remember how at the beginning I was cross with the interference and the change in plan, but not a few minutes passed and I began to enjoy their company, especially the company of Tzvi, tall and slender, with green eyes and a particular sense of humour. When we stood to go, he suggested to escort me home, for he was going in the same direction, to his parents’ home in Ramat-Gan. When we got home we continued to speak at length and he asked me out – and the rest, as they say, was history.
כמובן שזה היה מאד משעשע כשגיליתי ששם משפחתו של צבי זה גם כן סגל, כי פתאום היו לי גם אח וגם חבר בעלי אותו השם בדיוק.
Of course it was most amusing when I discovered that Tzvi’s family name was also Segal. For suddenly I had a brother and a good friend with exactly the same name.
וכך התחלנו לצאת, בילינו על גדות הירקון ושטנו בסירות משוטים, בילינו על שפת הים, ויצאנו עם החבורה לסרטים, לקפה, למסיבות ולריקודים. ולא עבר זמן רב והחלטנו להתחתן .
And so we began to go out, we spent time enjoying ourselves along the banks of the river Yarkon, oaring boats, and then going down to the beach, and going out with our friends to the cinema, cafés, and social dances. Within a short time we decided to get married.
מסיבת פורים – Purim Party
זו הייתה תקופת הצנע של שנות החמישים המוקדמות וכמובן מוצרי מזון בסיסים היו בחוסר
It was a time when food was rationed, in the early 1950s even basic food stuffs were in shortage.
את האוכל לחתונה הכנו אני וחברותיי. כל היום עמלנו בהכנת הסנדוויצ’ים והעוגה. את הביצים לעוגה שהיו בחוסר, הצליח צבי להבריח ממשק ביצים של חברים משדה-ורבורג, בתוך החלל שבין דפנות החלון של המשאית.
The food for the wedding, my friends and I prepared. All day we worked to prepare sandwiches and cake. The eggs for the cake, which were in shortage, Tzvi managed to smuggle from a friends’ chicken coop in Sede-Warburg, in the space of the windows and doors of the truck.
האורחים הרבים והרעבים שבאו לחתונה המתינו למזון ליד דלת המטבח, כך ששום מגש לא הצליח לעשות את דרכו עד לשולחנות, אולם השמחה הייתה רבה
The many hungry guests who came to the wedding would wait next to the kitchen door, such that not a single tray of food made its way to the tables, never-the-less the air was punctuated by joy.
